NAD’s on 3 – Rugby post for June 14
The NADS continued their winning ways in Saskatoon this past weekend. The buried the Saskatoon Gophers 36 – 0; poor little rodents didn’t know what hit them.
Interlock action this weekend saw all the Regina teams and Moose Jaw match up against the Saskatoon teams.
Moose Jaw came out playing hard, but did not score until about the 15 minute mark when Tryan Sapergia dipped and doodled himself weaving through numerous would be tackles that looked like they wanted no part of tackling him as he picked up speed like a locomotive.
Next to the try line was Murray Smith who had a nice run himself from about thirty meters out. Murray at 6’4” runs as well as anyone on the pitch and with gorilla like arms to match his size he just swatted the would be tacklers away as he bounded his way to 1 of two try’s in the match for Smith. Sapergia went on to score another before the half with another long run. As the second half started the back breaker for the Gophers would have to be the beautiful steal by “Fly Boy” Mike Dunning at half, with cat like reflexes and a cunning sixth sense of where the next pass was going, Dunning shot the gap, intercepted the ball and was gone on the longest try of the game. This was Dunning’s second try of the game and the most dramatic. Game MVP went to Dunning as this spectacular performance was the best of the season for him so far. Other honorable mentions have to be KC Reed a grade 11 student who plays as well as any of the big boys and adds another nice dimension to the team. Speaking of big boys the second row for the NADS have a taken a lot of scrutiny lately from the coach and the media for their lack of intensity. Even though the two second rows average an age of 43, and it should be noted that this is one of the most demanding positions to play other than the front row which no one really wants to play. But imagine sticking your head between two asses that really stink more as the game progresses and rubbing your ears off and pushing as hard as you can each and every scrum until you have no energy left, did I mention putting your head between two asses, anyways honorable mentions were given to Winston Montgrand who started the game and Dave Jukes who came in for the last 20 minutes as the other staring second row went down with a hamstring injury. Jukes played outstanding for the time he was in even though he increased the average age of the second row to 56 with his entrance. Coach Christianson went on to say, “I know I’ve been a little hard on some of our forwards and older guys but if they don’t get their fat asses into shape quick the winning won’t come as easy, we have been lucky of late that the backs are playing so well!
Christianson also went on to say, “that our kicking game right now really sucks, were leaving to many points off the board because of it”. All are anxiously awaiting Paul Greasy’s return, as the star kicker should be returning soon.
