NADS vs Grads

Give yourself a pinch or your girlfriend or someone’s girlfriend?, no your not dreaming the NADS are legit!
It was a beautiful night for rugby and the weatherman cooperated with some cloud cover to start the game cooling off what other wise was a sizzling day. The NADS took the field with confidence and a nice complement of players. It is odd to see more than a couple, if any subs on the sideline! After the embarrassing loss last time these two teams went at it the NADS were making sure that they had enough players and speed to sub when needed!
It took about twenty minutes and a lot of grueling hard work by the forwards before the first try was actually scored. At 22:32 Kyle Leduc went in from about 9 meters out on well fought battle by the forwards who inched and fought their way from the their own 22 to punch it across for a well deserving 5 point lead! Greasy the NADS old time kicker who has only been getting better with age converted the try with ease.
Andrew Tjeltveit also scored 10 minutes later with another short spurt and again the forward’s grueling display of toughness and some finesse by the backs to get the NADS in range. The NADS capitalized on some sloppy passing by the grads when a missed passed by the grads was heading out of bounds and by some quick thinking and pure instinct of the game Murry Smith with a soccer style kick saved the ball an inch from the side line. Smith rocketed the ball forward along the sideline for speedster Elisha Baition to again give it another kick to gain some field advantage; run on to it and take it all the way down to the 5-meter line where the forwards went back to work.
Both youngsters Kyle Leduc and Andrew Tjeltveit played a strong game for the NADS who saw 4 rookies get playing time and contribute to the win!

Half time 14 – 5 NADS!

Second half was tougher than the first, which was to be expected as the Grads came out hitting harder than the first and with determination to get back into the game quickly! Greasie again added to the NAD lead as he kicked a penalty kick from about 30 meters out giving the NADS a 17 – 5 lead. The Grads immediately responded after the score to quick kick and catch the NADS sitting back on their fannies maybe a little to happy with the lead. It was evident how much was on the line with these two teams as tempers flared close to the NADs try line again and a fight broke out; and the Grads scored. Yes, the Grads scored as the fight was in progress without any stoppage in play by the official. No penalties were handed out even through second man in for the Grads was able to get some cheap shot punches off against the NADS who were only trying to stop the original bout.
Inspired by the heart of the rookie NAD who stood up and fought for his team the NADS answered back almost immediately with a phenomenal run and pass play by superstar 8 man Murry Smith. Breaking out on the short side he was able to sucker in some Grad defensive players and make a beautiful pass toAdrian Enns. Enns then scampered to the try line with a nice run from 20 meters outrunning 3 Grad tacklers. This try was not converted as Greasie was understandably distracted by a young lady in a bikini just behind the posts in the grads end zone. The Grads had no intentions of quitting after the score which gave the NADS the lead by 17 making the score 22 – 5. With again some quick work of the kickoff and some sit back sloppy play by the NADS the grad soon answered back with a try of their own, but missed the conversion making the score 22 – 10.
Hold on to your NADS! The best and sweetest play of the game came when Murry Smith who like a gazelle on this played broke loose and went on a gallop of about 40 meters before getting tripped up from behind, but not until popping the ball back to the lone support Albert’s who went into score his first of the game. This beautiful play caught admiration of the some 250 fans in the stands; as all stood cheering and applauding; except of course the Grad fans.

Final score 29 – 15…

Although there was some outstanding plays by certain leaders on the team all can be applauded on a truly great win by the entire team who say all contribute.

NADs vs Rogues

NADS come away with win despite being short staffed!
The Moose jaw NADS beat the odds this weekend as they took down the top team in the league with out three of their key players. Missing starters Emil Christianson, Tryan Sapergia, and World renowned rugby star Murray Smith. The NADS still managed to beat the Rogues 27 -0
The NADS had a 8 - 0 lead after the first half which could have been a lot worse had they capitalized on some very aggressive play and scored the numerous times they were within the 22 of the Rogues.
The NADS play of late has been very impressive and can be attributed to the impresssive improvement of the backs. Also to all star South African Martin Alberts who has made it his mission to have the NADS in the division 1 final this year. Alberts has been a main contibutor keeping the backs working hard and focused!

Stay tuned as the NADS play June 17 at home vs. the Grads.
The Grads will be a tough team to beat as they are the fittest team in the league having gone through a grueling training program all winter and into the summer at level 10 in Regina and the NADS have been on the Dave Jukes training program for most of the winter and spring only early summer they did realize this program was not working for them!

Mentionables: It was nice to have Reggy Jackson back in the line up, he also contributed to the victory. With luck he could possibly back for the play-offs. Reggy is currently farthering a rugby team of his own in Cold Lake Aberta.

NADS Proud of "Dick"

The Moose Jaw NADS are very proud of their very own Jeff Throssell. The long time member of the team set some goals for him self this last year that resulted with some amazing accompishments. Only a man with the determination and will power that Jeff has could accomplish what he did at his age. Awesome work "Dicky"
Jeff Throssell takes silver at the Sask. body building provincials in Saskatoon after winning Gold in April!
For more on this read the article in the Moose Jaw Times Hearld dated June 30!

Impressive first showing for Moose Jaw competitor
After winning his first bodybuilding gold medal in April, Jeff Throssell received a lot of accolades from performers and judges alike.

They were so impressed with his performance at the provincial qualifiers that they strongly encouraged him to make an appearance at the provincial championships.

The Moose Jaw native did just that, and while he picked up a silver medal, the experience was very different from what he expected.

“ There were no slouches at this one,” said Throssell with a laugh. “Everyone was in good shape. It was quite a different world from the other one. I guess that’s what happens when you go up a level.”

The Saskatoon competition last weekend was undoubtedly a tougher field. But he’s not sure the extra training to reach that level is something he’s comfortable doing.

“ Well, I don’t know if I’m going to do it again,” he said. “My joints are sore because my body has been so lean for so long. It takes a toll on the body.”

Once finished the competition, Throssell started eating a more normal diet, and he was surprised at how starved his body had been.

“I put 20 pounds back on in three days,” he said. “ When I started feeding it fruit and everything, it just sucked it right up.”
Throssell still works as a truck driver, finding creative ways to keep up his workout regimen while on the road. Now he’s taking that to another level.

“ I just got a semi-trailer customized and I bought some gym equipment and I’m going to live in it on the road, and have my gym in there too,” he said. “Maybe I will have the time to get serious about it, I don’t know.”

After meeting others in the sport, Throssell has a new appreciation for how much hard work and dedication is needed to find success at the higher levels.

“ There’s other people who work the long hours and do it too. It just takes a lot of determination with the diet,” he said. “ Training’s the easy part, at least until you get down to the end of your last month or so when you’re depleting down so much that you don’t have energy.”

For the moment, Throssell is evaluating his future as a bodybuilder. A second-place finish is nothing to sneeze at, and he’s considering a run at nationals in Saskatoon next year.

He certainly has no illusions about the nature of the sport, nor about what it takes to win.

“It’s all just for one day. That’s what people do for photo shoot, and that’s what people need to realize,” he said. “ You’re never going to look like people on the cover of a magazine, because this is what people do for a living. They know how to manipulate their body for one day.”

NADS vs Condors June 19th

NADS WIN 40 – 0

Once again all the planets aligned in the solar system as the NADS went on to another stellar performance and convincing win in Division 1 play in Regina Friday night beating the Condors 40 – 0. “The return of star kicker and defensive god Paul Grajczyk makes a huge difference in our game” said Dave Jukes. Playing the whole game because of a lack of front row players Jukes added the first of six trys early in the game as he bulldozed his way from 10 meters out brushing away numerous would be tacklers. 5 more trys would follow: Mike Dunning (2), Martin Alberts (2), and Elisha Baiton (1). Grajczk would convert 5 of 6.
Curtis Constable had an outstanding defensive game making some bone crushing hits early in the game which set the tone for the rest of the game.
Jeff Throsell made his first return since taking hiatus to go on tour with his body building competitions.
Jukes went on to comment about how well the backs have been playing as the doctors; Martin Alberts and P.J Vertue take control and lead the backs every game.
Quite and outstanding game considering players missing were; all-star back Tryan Sapergia, player coach Emil Christianson, and Murray Smith were all away with the Regina Fire.

Game vs Saskatoon Gophers

NAD’s on 3 – Rugby post for June 14
The NADS continued their winning ways in Saskatoon this past weekend. The buried the Saskatoon Gophers 36 – 0; poor little rodents didn’t know what hit them.
Interlock action this weekend saw all the Regina teams and Moose Jaw match up against the Saskatoon teams.
Moose Jaw came out playing hard, but did not score until about the 15 minute mark when Tryan Sapergia dipped and doodled himself weaving through numerous would be tackles that looked like they wanted no part of tackling him as he picked up speed like a locomotive.
Next to the try line was Murray Smith who had a nice run himself from about thirty meters out. Murray at 6’4” runs as well as anyone on the pitch and with gorilla like arms to match his size he just swatted the would be tacklers away as he bounded his way to 1 of two try’s in the match for Smith. Sapergia went on to score another before the half with another long run. As the second half started the back breaker for the Gophers would have to be the beautiful steal by “Fly Boy” Mike Dunning at half, with cat like reflexes and a cunning sixth sense of where the next pass was going, Dunning shot the gap, intercepted the ball and was gone on the longest try of the game. This was Dunning’s second try of the game and the most dramatic. Game MVP went to Dunning as this spectacular performance was the best of the season for him so far. Other honorable mentions have to be KC Reed a grade 11 student who plays as well as any of the big boys and adds another nice dimension to the team. Speaking of big boys the second row for the NADS have a taken a lot of scrutiny lately from the coach and the media for their lack of intensity. Even though the two second rows average an age of 43, and it should be noted that this is one of the most demanding positions to play other than the front row which no one really wants to play. But imagine sticking your head between two asses that really stink more as the game progresses and rubbing your ears off and pushing as hard as you can each and every scrum until you have no energy left, did I mention putting your head between two asses, anyways honorable mentions were given to Winston Montgrand who started the game and Dave Jukes who came in for the last 20 minutes as the other staring second row went down with a hamstring injury. Jukes played outstanding for the time he was in even though he increased the average age of the second row to 56 with his entrance. Coach Christianson went on to say, “I know I’ve been a little hard on some of our forwards and older guys but if they don’t get their fat asses into shape quick the winning won’t come as easy, we have been lucky of late that the backs are playing so well!
Christianson also went on to say, “that our kicking game right now really sucks, were leaving to many points off the board because of it”. All are anxiously awaiting Paul Greasy’s return, as the star kicker should be returning soon.

Rugby Shorts:
NADS are now 3-2 on the season

NADS have not had all starters play a game together yet this season.

Murray Smith and Tryan Sapergia lead all scorers with 8 trys each.

Corey Short is expected to make an appearance sometime this summer. Also Reggie Jackson will be on leave from the Cold Lake Penquins and is expected to play at the end of the month.
Still many players that have not shown up to training camp for various reason’s;

Rob Hassal was recently exported from Scotland for mishaps of which are unmentionable at this time, he is expected to suit up for the next game.

Rugby Post June 7 Game vs Highlanders 2009

“NADS ON 3”. Moose Jaw Rugby Post for June 7.

Not sure if it was the humiliation from being thrashed by the Grads last Friday night or the grass and team bonding after the game, (birds in the bush), or the fact that the grass is greener in Moose Jaw, but the NADS put together an impressive game on Friday night beating the Highlanders 39 to 12.
Both Dave Jukes supervisor of operations and head player/coach Emil Christianson were smiling after the game. Jukes had imported Emil Christianson in from the University of Victoria over two years ago to clean up the organization and it has been paying dividends ever since. Last year the NADS enjoyed one of the best season in a lot of years in division 1 play. A lot of that can be contributed to the new coach and a few added delights such as super star Murray Smith also from B.C., the two South African doctors and Mike “fly boy” Dunning have complimented Sapergia and a few other stand-out NADS to bring their game to new levels.
If Friday night is any indication of the future for the NADS, watch out! Playing that well, winning and still missing some key players in key positions is an unusual feat, but considering the type of team the NADS have a reputation of being it is not overly surprising. The NADS have a reputation of being one of the most hearted and feistiest teams in the province, although lacking fitness at times, the true grit and determination to win often over comes any adversity!
Friday night the highlanders took advantage of some poor ball handling off the starting kick-off to score one of the fastest trys in rugby history. That slap in the face and fear of a repeat from last Friday kicked Moose Jaw right in the “nads” and motivated them to take the game into their own hands. Coach Christianson took some time on the try line during the attempted conversion to motivate his team and remind them of the game plan they had practiced on Wednesday. “Well, I just let them know how pissed off I was, dropped a few “F” bombs and said I would probably kill some of them if we lost this game”! That seemed to be enough to motivate them as the NADS scored very quickly afterwards and didn’t let up much after that. The Highlanders did squeak by a few times to score but those two times were only because of sloppy tackling which was soon rectified in both situations!
Scoring Summary:
Muz 2 trys
Tryan 3 trys
Elisha 1 try
Alberts 1 try
Converts by Sapergia.

The NADS would also like to thank the fill-in official for managing the game on such short notice. Although at times it looked like he suffered from Alzheimer’s, maybe not just sometimes! All in all he did a good job with very little disagreement, rather just a few head shakes!

Rugby Shorts:

Adrian Enns left the game at half with an undisclosed injury. Is expected to be back in action next week if his wife lets him.

Check out the picture in the herald this week of star back and old time NAD - - Robbie Fleck!

Rob Halsall is currently on a 2 week rugby exchange to Scotland. They got him,…. and we got nothing!

Still expected to show up to training in the near future; Montana, P.J., Winston Montgrand, Johnny Hort, Greg Martin, Tweeze, Big Daddy, Corey Short, Buenno and Robbie fleck!

Paul Greasie will be able to play next game as his 4 game suspension will be paid in full.

Next game action will be in Saskatoon this weekend, some old NADS that currently reside in Saskatoon are expected to partake in either the game or activities after.
